Immersive Extended Reality Training for Human Performance Improvement: Elevating Safety and Efficiency for a U.S. Utility Provider

Client Challenge

A leading U.S. utility provider, serving hundreds of thousands of electric and natural gas customers across several states, needed a way to ensure consistent and reliable operations. Even a small error could cost millions, harm the company’s reputation, and create unsafe conditions that put employees at risk. To address these challenges, the provider sought a solution that would reduce errors, improve safety, and build a resilient organization capable of responding effectively to high-risk situations using Human Performance Improvement (HPI) strategies.

The Solution

VAEZR partnered with the utility provider to design and implement an advanced extended reality (XR)-based training solution. Recognizing that traditional training methods were insufficient for addressing the complexity of their work, VAEZR developed 20 immersive simulations tailored to teach critical decision-making skills, address high-risk scenarios, and improve workplace safety.

Research and Collaboration

  • VAEZR conducted in-depth interviews with employees across multiple departments to identify past errors, potential risks, and cross-functional impacts on operations.
  • The team identified error-prone processes and behaviors, which became the foundation for the development of targeted XR simulations focused on safety, decision-making, and operational efficiency.

Custom XR Development

  • VAEZR designed realistic, high-fidelity scenarios using 360-degree and 180-degree immersive camera technology, paired with high-resolution video for greater visual impact.
  • AI-driven interactive trainers were incorporated to ensure consistency in instruction and adaptability for varying skill levels.
  • The XR simulations were designed to allow employees, from field workers to senior leaders, to practice decision-making in realistic, high-pressure environments while emphasizing safety and error prevention.

Integrated Solutions

  • VAEZR delivered the training via two immersive platforms: a 180-degree projection wall at the client’s facility for team-based training, and portable VR headsets for scalability and flexibility.
  • Live, actor-based trainers and AI trainers were embedded in the simulations, enhancing the learning experience and addressing skill variability across different user groups.

Results

Over three years, the XR-based training program developed by VAEZR became a core part of the utility provider’s daily operations, dramatically improving operational performance and safety outcomes. The initiative not only enhanced individual and team capabilities but also led to a cultural shift toward safety, precision, and innovation throughout the organization.

Key Outcomes:

  • Enhanced Decision-Making: Employees demonstrated improved critical thinking and situational awareness, enabling them to respond more effectively in high-stakes situations.
  • Significant Error Reduction: Operational errors were reduced significantly, which led to improved safety and decreased downtime across the organization.
  • Increased Safety Preparedness: Teams became more adept at identifying and mitigating risks, contributing to a safer environment for both employees and customers.
  • Efficient Knowledge Transfer: VAEZR’s solution allowed for the preservation and sharing of institutional knowledge, enabling new employees to quickly adapt while benefiting from the expertise of seasoned team members.
  • Cross-Departmental Adoption: The success of the XR training program prompted its expansion into other departments, such as sales and finance, proving its versatility and effectiveness across the organization.

By the end of the initiative, the utility provider saw measurable improvements in operational efficiency and a renewed organizational commitment to safety and innovation. Employees reported greater confidence in handling complex scenarios, while leadership noted a clear return on investment in the technology-driven training solution.

Looking Ahead

VAEZR’s immersive solutions have positioned this U.S. utility provider as a leader in operational innovation. By utilizing cutting-edge technology to address the challenges unique to the utility sector, they have set a new standard for safety, resilience, and adaptability. This initiative showcases the transformative potential of XR technology, not only for utilities but for any organization operating in high-stakes environments. As XR technology continues to evolve, the utility provider’s success offers a valuable blueprint for industries seeking to improve training, enhance safety, and ensure long-term operational success.
